August 3, 2013 Sunday Public Run Day Report
The weather was bright and sunny with a slight breeze from the NW. Temperature was in the high 80s low 90s. A beautiful day. The gates opened up at 11AM and the station filled to capacity in a matter of minutes. Perhaps they saw our show on Torrance CitiCable? The station was run by Phil, with Robert as the dispatcher and lemonade maker. Joanne Smith ran the depot store with some help from Dave K's wife. We started out a little slow but eventually we had 5 trains running. First out was Kelly (eng.) and his son Jeff (cond.) on their Santa Fe 1244 GP. Steve was out next with the clubs Santa Fe F7 with Andy as his conductor. Next out was Howie on his UP 1205 SW1500 with Bob as his conductor, followed by Jim and Charlie on Jim's Sweetcreek, C&P #9. Charlie was engineering as Jim is still healing from a knee injury. As the station got even more crowded, with the line now out the gate and wrapping down the sidewalk, Tom brought out the clubs SW1500 the WCRR #777 pulling 5 of the new club cars. We could have used a few more trains, but we did OK with what we had. The crowds continued until well after closing time, so we stayed open a bit longer so that everyone got a ride. We ended up closing the gates around 4PM giving over 1200 rides. The day went very smoothly with no derails or incidents as we have been spending a lot of time leveling and replacing worn track and switches. All that work seems to have paid off. Daisy outdid herself as always providing us with a super lunch of BBQ roast beef brisket, yams, corn, baked beans, homemade garlic cheese biscuits with strawberry lemonade to wash it all down. Hawaiian shaved ice and homemade chocolate brownies for desert. Everything was delicious. Our new member Rick was busy painting the new little house that he donated. Check out the photos on the clubs web site. It is really cute and will be a nice addition to SCLS. No scouts available for the flag ceremony this time, so Phil and Robert performed the flag raising and striking ceremonies. Thanks to all that helped out and made this a very smooth and enjoyable run day. Our next run day is Saturday August 17th. Come on out and ride the trains. Edited by PhilC - Aug 17 2013 at 11:52pm |

I used to be a rocket scientist, now I am just a space cadet.
------------------------------ You only need three tools in life - WD-40, Duct Tape, and a Hammer. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape. If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem. |
