These are two valves that sit on top of the boiler. Sometimes when a steam locomotive sit sitting in the station or when it’s running down hill they will open and let the excess steam pressure out of the boiler. It can make a lot of noise and put on the show. It often startles people and they get concerned that something is wrong with the locomotive. Everything is fine and that is the design of the valves they are doing there job and the locomotive is working correctly. In the photo I have just cleaned the valves next I will test them to make sure they are set to the right pressure. In this case one is set to open when the boiler pressure gets to 120 lbs. the other valve is set to 125 lbs. Time has past for people to be around a railroad steam locomotive vary often. What was probably a nominal almost Unnoticed event when riding a train is now something totally unique. |
