After the train crews complained of rough track Tom D took on the job of fixing it. Here you can see the old wood tie track panels have been removed and the old ballast stone scraped down. Next Tom will install two rebuilt track panels, the rebuilt panels reuse old rail with new recycled plastic ties. On the return track there is still one track panel with wood ties and the switch has some wood ties as well. The ties on those will be replaced individually on the ground. It is technically less work to do it that way. It was felt necessary to do this work before the rainy season. With the dry so cal weather the old wood tie do last a long time these particular ties are over 25 years old and had no wood treatment applied. When the old ties get wet with the rain the wood fails and they come apart and that makes running a train over them interesting. |
