Abandoned Trains of the Soviet Era

By Phillip Cohen - Torrance, CA

Below one can find the pictures of the locomotive depot in Sukhumi, Abkhazia (the former USSR republic). It seems that time has stopped there since the USSR collapse.

One of my other hobbies / professions besides computer programming is photography, we can't play train all the time you know. I am a member of the South Bay Camera Club here in Torrance, CA and thus always looking for interesting photo essays and images to put in the "Photo Essay" portion of our club web site at. http://www.sbccphoto.org/. On searching the World Wide Web, I happened across a site called "English Russia" http://englishrussia.com/ that had a number of interesting photo essays on some of the more interesting yet unknown parts of the Soviet Union and the resultant collapse. The images on the site are provided by the readers of the web site that either lived in the area or traveled there as tourists. Some very interesting images and subjects from nuclear submarines to Joe Stalin's lost railroad.

I thought I would re-post a few of the images here to peak your curiosity and to perhaps inspire you to go out and take photos of our local railroads as some of them are in good shape and still in use while others are fading away quickly. Now on to the show.

The Abandoned Trains of the Soviet Era
